News
Godavari Biorefineries Limited (GBL), in partnership with the Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT) Mumbai has launched a pioneering pilot project that converts industrial CO2 emissions into Dimethyl Ether (DME), a clean-burning, low-emission fuel.
DME can replace conventional energy sources such as LPG and diesel while also serving as a versatile chemical feedstock for industrial applications. This innovation marks a significant step toward decarbonisation and sustainable energy solutions.
Chairman Samir Somaiya highlighted the importance of sustainability and the role of this technology in addressing India’s “triple challenge” ensuring energy security, mitigating climate change, and enhancing rural prosperity by supporting farmer incomes. He stressed that India’s inherent resources, including soil, sunlight, and small farmers, are critical for driving a renewable energy transition.
The technology is the result of scientific research led by Prof. G. D. Yadav and his team at ICT Mumbai, whose expertise in chemical engineering and catalyst development has been central to this breakthrough. On the industrial side, GBL has worked to ensure the pilot project is scalable, commercially viable, and aligned with industry standards.
The joint effort has been recognised with the K.V. Mariwala Award for Effective Chemical Industry-Academia Partnership (2024), honouring their excellence in scientific innovation, environmental impact, and practical implementation with potential for global replication.
