The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) and the stock exchanges have introduced various pre-emptive surveillance measures to enhance market integrity and safeguard the interest of investors. Some of these measures include the reduction in price band, periodic call auction and transfer of securities to the Trade for Trade segment from time to time.

Apart from the above measures, there are Additional Surveillance Measures (ASM). Securities are placed in the ASM list based on objective parameters like price/volume variation, volatility, client concentration, market capitalization, delivery percentage, price-to-earnings ratio, and the number of unique PANs.

The main objective of putting these stocks in the ASM category is to make investors cautious and to alert them while dealing with such stocks.
