The banking sector is poised for a significant transformation as it aims to achieve record low non-performing assets (NPAs) by FY25. This improvement is attributed to robust provisioning measures and enhanced asset quality across various banks, setting a positive outlook for the financial landscape.

Non-Performing Assets (NPAs) are loans or advances that have not generated income for a financial institution due to missed payments on principal or interest for over 90 days.

Here are a few banks where management anticipates a significant reduction in NPA:

Indian Overseas Bank

With a market capitalization of Rs.1.03 lakh crore, shares of Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) closed at Rs.54.30 on Friday, marking a 0.3 percent decrease from the previous closing price.

In terms of NPA management, gross NPA fell from Rs.6,980 crores to Rs.6,649 crores as of June 30, 2024. Net NPA decreased from Rs.1,436 crores to Rs.1,154 crores. The gross NPA ratio dropped from 7.13 percent last year to 2.89 percent, while the net NPA ratio declined from 1.44 percent to 0.51 percent. Furthermore, the credit cost was reduced to 0.29 percent compared to the previous quarter.

In an interview with CNBC-TV18, Ajay Kumar Srivastava, Chief Managing Director and CEO of Indian Overseas Bank, emphasised the bank’s strategy to sustain margins and reduce NPA while increasing loans at a mid-teen growth rate.

IOB aims to maintain its margins between 3.25 percent and 3.30 percent moving forward. The bank also plans to reduce gross non-performing assets (NPA) by 100 basis points (bps) to 2.10 percent by FY25, with a target for net NPA set at 0.25 to 0.30 percent.

According to its recent financial updates, the bank reported Net Interest Income of Rs.6,535 crore in Q1 FY25, marking an increase of 16.5 percent from Rs.5,424 crore in Q1 FY24. Net profits increased 5.3 percent to Rs.633 crore from Rs.500 crore in the same period.

Punjab National Bank

With a market capitalization of Rs.1.19 lakh crore, shares of Punjab National Bank (PNB) closed at Rs.104.76 on Friday, marking a 1.03 percent increase from the previous closing price.

In terms of NPA, the gross NPA, which was approximately Rs. 70,899 crores a year ago in June 2023, has decreased to Rs. 51,263 crores. The gross NPA percentage has fallen from around 7.73 percent in the June 2023 quarter to 4.98 percent, down from 5.73 percent in the previous March quarter, reflecting a reduction of approximately 75 basis points quarter-over-quarter.

Net NPA, previously at Rs. 17,129 crores, has been reduced to Rs. 5,930 crores. The net NPA percentage has declined from 1.98 percent in June 2023 to 0.60 percent, compared to 0.73 percent in the March quarter.

Atul Kumar Goel, MD and CEO of PNB, stated that the bank initially anticipated a gross non-performing asset (GNPA) ratio of 5 percent. However, it has already reached 4.98 percent in the first quarter. As a result, the forecast has been adjusted downward to below 4 percent by the end of the financial year.
