Synopsis: Overall telephone subscribers in India rose from 1,198.5 million at the end of May 2021 to 1,202.57 million the following month, up 0.34% but Vodafone Idea continues to lose users.

According to the latest data from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, Reliance Jio added 5.5 million subscribers to its network in June, followed by Bharti Airtel with 3.8 million users, and Vodafone Idea continued its losing streak by losing another 4.3 million customers in the reporting period.

With a monthly growth rate of 0.34%, India’s total telephone customers climbed from 1,198.50 million at the end of May 2021 to 1,202.57 million at the end of June 2021.

According to the data, urban telephone subscriptions climbed from 661.18 million in May 2021 to 666.10 million in June 2021, while rural subscriptions declined from 537.32 million to 536.47 million in the same time period.

In June 2021, the monthly growth rates of urban and rural telephone subscriptions were 0.74% and -0.16%, respectively. India’s overall teledensity climbed from 87.84% in May 2021 to 88.07% in June 2021.

Rural teledensity declined from 60.22% to 60.10% during the same period, whereas urban teledensity climbed from 140.04% at the end of May 2021 to 140.86% at the end of June 2021.

At the end of June 2021, urban and rural subscribers accounted for 55.39% and 44.61% of all telephone subscribers, respectively.

Private access service providers had a market share of 89.95% of wireless subscribers as of June 30, 2021, whilst BSNL and MTNL, the two PSU access service providers, had a market share of only 10.05%.

A total of 12.27 million MNP (Mobile Number Portability) requests were received during the month of June 2021. Zone-I received 7.31 million new requests while Zone-II received 4.95 million new requests out of a total of 12.27 million new requests.

Since the adoption of MNP, total MNP requests have climbed from 593.61 million at the end of May 2021 to 605.88 million at the end of June 2021.

In May, there were 986.11 million active wireless subscribers. The total number of wireless customers fell from 1,183.11 million at the end of April to 1,176.84 million at the end of May, a monthly drop of 0.53%.

In urban regions, wireless subscriptions fell from 645.62 million at the end of April to 641.48 million at the end of May. Rural wireless subscriptions fell from 537.49 million to 535.36 million for the same time period.

The monthly fall rates for wireless subscriptions in urban and rural areas were 0.64% and 0.40%, respectively. In India, wireless teledensity fell from 86.78% at the end of April to 86.25% at the end of May.

The urban wireless teledensity dropped from 136.96% in late April to 135.86% in late May. During the same time span, rural teledensity fell from 60.26% to 60%.

At the end of May, urban and rural wireless subscribers accounted for 54.51% and 45.49% of total wireless subscribers, respectively.

It looks like Vodafone Idea is reaching its end road.
