Brazil’s new head coach Carlo Ancelotti has announced his first national team squad ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, and it has surprised many fans and analysts. Neymar and Rodrygo, two of Brazil’s biggest football stars, are missing from the squad. On the other
hand, veteran midfielder Casemiro has been recalled after being left out of Brazil’s recent Copa América squad. As part of the South American World Cup qualifiers, Brazil is set to face Ecuador on June 5 and Paraguay on June 10. These matches mark the beginning of a new era under Ancelotti, and his selection already shows signs of change.
Neymar Left Out Due to Fitness
Brazil’s top goal scorer of all time, Neymar, has not been selected for the squad. The forward has only recently returned to playing after suffering a torn ACL and meniscus in October 2023 during a World Cup qualifier against Uruguay. He has since resumed training and made a return to his boyhood club Santos, but Ancelotti confirmed that Neymar is still not fully fit to play at the international level.
According to Ancelotti, he and Neymar discussed the situation, and both agreed it would be best for the player to continue focusing on his recovery. The coach emphasized that this decision does not mean Neymar is out of Brazil’s long-term plans. “I tried to select players who are in good shape,” Ancelotti said on Monday. “Neymar had an injury recently. “Everyone knows that Neymar is a very important player, he always has been and always will be.”

Rodrygo Also Not Included
Another major absence is Real Madrid forward Rodrygo. The 24-year-old was expected to be a key part of Ancelotti’s first squad, especially given his excellent form in Spain and recent performances for Brazil. However, Rodrygo reportedly asked to be left out of the squad to rest after a long season that included domestic and European commitments.
Ancelotti agreed with the decision, understanding the physical and mental fatigue that can come from a packed schedule. Rodrygo is expected to return in future call-ups and remains a key part of Brazil’s attacking plans.
Casemiro Returns
While Neymar and Rodrygo are out, Casemiro returns to the squad. The Manchester United midfielder had been excluded from Brazil’s Copa América campaign earlier this year. However, with his experience and leadership qualities, Ancelotti decided to bring him back to strengthen the midfield.
Ancelotti has closely collaborated with Casemiro during their time at Real Madrid, and his presence brings added stability and depth to the squad.
A Fresh Start
Carlo Ancelotti’s inaugural Brazil squad strikes a careful balance between giving key players a rest and incorporating seasoned veterans. With World Cup qualification underway, this marks the beginning of a new chapter for Brazil under one of football’s most respected managers.
