Australian cricket icon Glenn Maxwell has confirmed his retirement from One Day Internationals (ODIs). The decision comes after a successful 13-year career in the format, during which he became one of the most explosive and entertaining players in world cricket.

A Remarkable Career

He began his ODI journey in August 2012, making his debut against Afghanistan. Known for his fearless batting, sharp fielding, and handy off-spin bowling, he played a key role in Australia’s white-ball success over the years.

In total, Maxwell played 149 ODIs for Australia. He scored 3,990 runs at an average of 33.81 and a phenomenal strike rate of 126.70, which is the second-highest in ODI history among players with over 2,000 runs (only behind Andre Russell of West Indies). He smashed 4 centuries and 23 half-centuries, with a career-best score of 201 not out. With the ball, he contributed as a part-time off-spinner, taking 77 wickets, and was always a reliable fielder known for his quick reflexes and athletic catches.

A World Cup Hero

Maxwell played a key role in Australia’s World Cup triumphs in both 2015 and 2023. One of his most unforgettable moments came in the 2023 ODI World Cup, when he scored an incredible 201 off 128 balls* against Afghanistan. Coming in with Australia struggling at 91 for 7, Maxwell single-handedly turned the match around, guiding his team to one of the greatest wins in World Cup history. This double century was not just his highest score but also became one of the greatest ODI innings ever played.

Why He Retired

On Monday’s episode of the Final Word Podcast, it was revealed that the physical demands of ODI cricket had become overwhelming for him, especially following his broken leg in 2022, with soreness resurfacing after matches during the recent Champions Trophy.

I felt like I was letting the team down a little bit with how the body was reacting to the conditions” Maxwell said. He will still be available for T20 Internationals and is aiming to play in the 2026 T20 World Cup.

His Legacy

Glenn Maxwell will be remembered as a game-changer in ODI cricket. His ability to hit big shots, take quick wickets, and field brilliantly made him a complete package. He was a crowd favorite for his entertaining style and a crucial part of Australia’s modern cricket success.

Though his ODI journey has ended, fans can still look forward to seeing him light up the field in T20s. His retirement marks the end of an exciting chapter in Australian cricket, but the “Big Show” isn’t done entertaining just yet.
