The Pahalgam attack, one of the most devastating terrorist incidents in India since the 2008 Mumbai attacks, took place on April 22, 2025, in Baisaran Valley near Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. Armed with rifles, five terrorists infiltrated the remote high tourist area accessible only on foot or horseback. The attackers separated men from women and children, asked for their religion, and then opened fire. The brutal assault claimed the lives of 26 tourists and left 20 others injured. The Pakistan-based Resistance Front group, Lashkar-e-Taiba claimed responsibility for the attack
Following the attack, India responded with a strong diplomatic measure by suspending the Indus Waters Treaty, signaling a significant escalation in its stance toward Pakistan. A strong investigation was conducted by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) that uncovered a coordinated terror plot involving Lashkar-e-Taiba, Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), and members of the Pakistan Army.
In response to the Pahalgam attack, India launched “Operation Sindoor” on May 7, 2025, targeting nine sites across Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. The operation aimed to destroy terrorist infrastructure reportedly linked to groups such as Jaish-e-Mohammed and Lashkar-e-Taiba. According to the Indian defence minister, the strikes resulted in the deaths of ~100 terrorists.
Pakistan strongly condemned the operation and retaliated with artillery shelling along the Line of Control, which led to civilian casualties on both sides. The situation has drawn concern from international bodies, including the United Nations and the European Union, America, and many world superpowers had their say regarding the escalating issue, which is as below
