The IPL 2025 Final between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) is one of the most anticipated matches of the season. Fans are eagerly waiting to see which team will lift their maiden IPL trophy. But with rain likely in Ahmedabad, many fans are asking: what will happen if the final is completely washed out? Here’s a clear and accurate breakdown of the rules and possible outcomes.

What if rain interrupts play during the final on June 3?

Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium is scheduled to host the IPL 2025 final on June 3. If rain interrupts the game and prevents it from being completed on the same day, there is no need to panic, the BCCI has allocated a reserve day, which is June 4.

What happens if the reserve day is also affected by rain?

If rain also washes out play on the reserve day and the match cannot be completed, the team that finished higher in the league stage will be declared the winner.

  • RCB and PBKS both ended the league stage with 19 points each.
  • However, PBKS had a better Net Run Rate (NRR) than RCB.

So, if no result is possible even after using reserve day, PBKS will be declared the winner of IPL 2025.

Is There Extra Time to Finish the Match?

Yes. The IPL rules allow an additional 120 minutes (2 hours) of extra time on both the scheduled match day and reserve day. This ensures the highest possible chance of completing the match. For example, if the match starts late due to rain, the cut-off time for play can be extended up to 11:56 PM to complete the match on the same day.

What If the Match Starts But is Interrupted?

If the match begins but is later stopped due to rain, the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method will be used to decide the result, but only if a minimum of 5 overs have been bowled in the second innings.

If 5 more overs are bowled in the second innings, the DLS method will decide the winner. If less than 5 overs are bowled and rain does not allow further play, even on the reserve day the result will be abandoned and the team with the better league stage position (PBKS) will be crowned champions.

While fans of both PBKS and RCB hope to see a full 20-over contest, rain can play spoilsport. Fortunately, the IPL has rules in place to handle such situations. If rain completely washes out the final and reserve day, Punjab Kings will be declared IPL 2025 champions, thanks to their superior Net Run Rate in the league stage. Let’s hope the weather holds, and we get a thrilling finale between two deserving teams.
