As the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 enters a crucial stage, the weather in Mumbai has raised concerns ahead of the high-stakes match between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Delhi Capitals (DC) on 21 May. Scheduled to be played at the Wankhede Stadium, this game could play a key role in deciding the final playoff spot. However, heavy rainfall in Mumbai may result in a washout.
Current Weather Conditions in Mumbai
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Mumbai is under a yellow alert from May 21 to May 24 due to a cyclonic system forming over the Arabian Sea. The city is likely to receive heavy rainfall with thunderstorms and strong winds over the next few days. These weather conditions pose a serious threat to the MI vs DC match, which is scheduled during a rainy spell.
Why This Match Matters
Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals are competing for the final playoff spot, with MI currently holding 14 points and an impressive Net Run Rate of +1.156. Delhi Capitals are close behind with 13 points and a NRR of +0.260. A win for either side would likely seal a spot in the top four.
However, if the match is washed out and no result is possible, both teams will receive one point each. In that case, MI would move up to 15 points while DC would remain at 14. In that scenario, MI would have the upper hand due to their superior NRR and would likely qualify for the playoffs. DC’s hopes of qualifying would then rely on how other teams perform in their remaining matches.

What Happens If It Rains?
According to the IPL rules, every effort is made to complete a match, even if it means reducing the number of overs. To make up for weather interruptions, the match can be extended by up to two hours, but at least five overs per team must be played for a result to be declared.
But if rain continues and even a five-over game is not possible within the extended time, the match will be declared a “No Result.” Importantly, there is no reserve day for league matches, so the teams have to hope that conditions allow for at least some play.
Request for Venue Change
Given the forecast, Delhi Capitals co-owner Parth Jindal has requested the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to consider shifting the match to another venue with better weather. He cited an instance where the RCB vs SRH match was moved for similar reasons. However, the BCCI has not made any official announcement about a venue change, and the match is still scheduled to be played in Mumbai.
The weather in Mumbai has emerged as a key concern in the lead-up to the MI vs DC encounter. With both teams fighting for a place in the playoffs, fans and players alike are hoping the rain stays away long enough for a fair contest. If the match is washed out, MI will benefit, while DC’s path to the playoffs becomes more difficult.
The situation highlights how nature can impact even the biggest sporting events, reminding us that some things remain out of human control, even in the world’s richest cricket league.
