In the extensive spectacle of the Indian Premier League (IPL), where cricketing dreams are shaped and legends are built, the playoffs have been the essence of greatness. Throughout 18 seasons, only a few franchises can claim to have a history in these playoffs, not just from a championship perspective but also with unmatched consistency to the end of the tournament.
Here we give an account of the IPL playoffs record a narrative of grit, hope, disappointment and triumph. Let’s walk through the stories of the teams that have made the playoffs their second home, year after year.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK)
When one talks about consistency, no team lives by that word more than the Chennai Super Kings. Under MS Dhoni’s leadership, CSK have made the playoffs in 12 of their 18 seasons – astonishing given they have missed 2 seasons (2016 & 2017) as a result of suspension. During their 12 playoff years, CSK have qualified for the finals 10 times, winning the trophy 5 times. CSK are, without question, the model of consistency and big-match mentality.
- Years Qualified: 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2018, 2019, 2021, 2023
- Titles: 5 (2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, 2023)
Mumbai Indians (MI)
If there is a benchmark for speaking at the right moment, it is MI. MI have made the playoffs 11 times and have made the finals 6 times in 11 attempts, 5 of which were championships. MI’s narrative of being slow starters to becoming the winningest team in IPL history became folklore in the annals of IPL history and theirs is the most consistent narrative in the IPL to date with no hints of it slowing down with or without Rohit Sharma.
- Years Qualified: 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2023

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB)
RCB is an example of hope and heartbreak. They have qualified for the playoffs on 10 occasions, but never won a trophy of any kind. They have reached the finals three times, but their devoted fans await that magical first championship. RCB have achieved their level of consistency, even when they were not successful which speaks more to their resilience.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)
KKR has qualified for the playoffs 8 times, making the underdog story into championship runs. They have 3 titles and are a team for ups and downs, continuous change and regeneration of players with great leadership in particular under Gautam Gambhir and more recently Shreyas Iyer.
- Years Qualified: 2011, 2012, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2021, 2024

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH)
The Sunrisers entered the IPL in 2013 and in a short time they have been known as regulars in the playoffs and have qualified for the playoffs a total of 7 times. Their best moment in the IPL came in 2016 when they won the title and they have qualified for the finals on 3 occasions most recently in the 2024 finals.
- Years Qualified: 2013, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2024

- Runners-up: (2018, 2024)

Each playoff appearance is a tale – months of preparation, incredible moments, and sometimes heartbreaking close calls. While CSK had their routine stroll into the playoffs, their “Yellow Army” prided themselves on that. How many nights has Mumbai made people smile because they arrived when they should? RCB owns the most ardent, devoted, and tear-jerking supporters who season after season troop into grounds to chant “Ee Sala Cup Namde” (This time, it’s ours.)
Kolkata Knight Riders have shown it is possible to come back from the dead, and Sunrisers Hyderabad is the biggest proof in the transition from ‘new entrants’ to ‘consistent players’ to creating a success culture. As IPL strengthens itself, these playoff records are more than just statistics, and are a heartbeat in a league that has popularised cricketers a global carnival of hope, theatre, and unshakable emotion.
