South Africa’s Keshav Maharaj has etched his name in the history books by becoming the first South African spinner to take 200 wickets in Test cricket. He achieved the milestone in his 59th Test, playing against Zimbabwe at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo.

The left-arm orthodox spinner reached the landmark in the seventh over of his spell, dismissing Craig Ervine with a slower ball that dipped and turned outside off. The delivery forced an edge, which was cleanly taken by wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne.

A Record-Breaking Journey

  • Maharaj’s 200th wicket sets him apart in a nation known more for pace than spin:
  • First South African spinner to reach 200 Test wickets
  • Ninth overall among South Africa’s all-time Test wicket-takers
  • 86 wickets at home with an average of 30.43, despite pace-friendly conditions
  • 48 wickets in 2017 alone his best year to date

Key Role in Proteas’ Success

Keshav Maharaj played a key role in South Africa’s 2023–25 World Test Championship win, beating Australia in the final at Lord’s. Looking ahead, Maharaj is expected to play a central role in the ongoing 2025–27 WTC cycle, especially in upcoming away series:

  • India

Current Test Performance

  • Figures: 16.4 overs, 3 wickets for 70 runs
