Barcelona president Joan Laporta has made it clear that he wants key defender Iñigo Martínez to sign a new contract with the club. The Spanish centre-back, who joined Barcelona from Athletic Club in the summer of 2023, has become a dependable figure in the team’s defense.

Martínez signed the deal when he arrived at Camp Nou, which is set to expire in June 2025. With just some days remaining, Laporta and the club’s management are eager to extend his stay and secure his services for the future.

Earlier this year, Martínez agreed to a one-year extension, keeping him at the club through the upcoming season. However, Laporta already believes the experienced centre-back should remain at Barcelona until 2027. Reports suggest that Martínez is also open to the idea and would be willing to extend his stay if the opportunity comes.

Laporta recently confirmed in a media interaction that the club is in ongoing discussions to renew Martínez contract. He praised the 34-year old’s impact on and off the field, especially highlighting his experience, leadership, and calmness in high-pressure moments. Laporta believes players like Martínez are essential for maintaining balance in a squad filled with young talents.

Since joining Barcelona, Iñigo Martínez has made key contributions in both La Liga and European competitions. Despite some injury setbacks early in his Barca career, he has shown his quality when fit, helping to organize the backline and offering strong performances alongside younger defenders like Ronald Araújo and Pau Cubarsí.

Barcelona is currently going through a phase where the club is trying to rebuild its core while keeping financial stability in mind. Extending contracts of key players is seen as part of that process. Loparta and sporting director Deco are also focusing on contract renewals for several young players, including Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsí, who represent the Club’s future.

Laporta recently mentioned in an interview that “we want Iñigo to stay,”and talks are progressing positivity. He emphasized that the defender has adapted well to Barcelona’s style and that the club values his presence in the dressing room as much as on the pitch.

The club’s vision is to blend experienced professionals like Martínez with emerging stars from La Masia. Laporta sees this as the best way forward to build a competitive squad for the long term.

As negotiations continue, fans are hopeful that an agreement will be reached soon. Securing Martínez’s future would not only provide defensive stability but also send a strong message that Barcelona is committed to keeping a strong core of experienced players.

With this leadership and reliability. He has consistently demonstrated his quality at the highest level, and Barcelona seems eager to see him continue in the Blaugrana colours beyond 2025.
