Real Madrid legend Luka Modrić will leave the club this summer, ending a glorious 13-year career in Spain. The 39-year-old Croatian midfielder will depart after playing in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, which takes place in the United States in June.

A Historic Career at Real Madrid

In 2012, Luka Modrić transferred from Tottenham Hotspur to Real Madrid for a fee of €30 million. Many questioned the move at the time, but he went on to become one of the greatest midfielders in the club’s history. Over 13 seasons, he played 590 matches, scored 43 goals, and helped Real Madrid win 28 major trophies.

Over 13 seasons, Modrić played a key role in helping the club secure 28 titles, including six European Cups, six Club World Cups, five UEFA Super Cups, four La Liga titles, two Copas del Rey, and five Spanish Super Cups.

Ballon d’Or Winner

In 2018, Modrić made history by winning the Ballon d’Or, breaking the decade-long dominance of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. That same year, he also won FIFA’s Best Men’s Player and UEFA’s Player of the Year. He was also a key player in Croatia’s run to the World Cup final in 2018.

His Final Matches

Luka Modrić is set to play his final home match for Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu on Saturday, May 24, against Real Sociedad. After that, he will captain the team one last time at the FIFA Club World Cup, where Madrid begins their campaign against Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal on June 18.

In an emotional message to fans, Modrić said: “Leaving with a full heart. Filled with pride, gratitude and unforgettable memories. And even though, after the Club World Cup, I’m no longer going to wear this shirt on the field, I’ll always be a Madrid fan.”

“Luka Modric will forever remain in the hearts of all madridistas (Madrid fans) as a unique and exemplary footballer who has always embodied the values of Real Madrid,” club president Florentino Pérez said. “His football has captured the imagination of madridismo and fans all over the world. His legacy will live on forever.”

What’s Next?

While Modrić is departing from Real Madrid, he is not retiring. He has said he wants to keep playing at a high level and has his sights set on representing Croatia at the 2026 World Cup. Reports suggest he got offers from various Clubs like Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and United States (MLS), though no official deal has been confirmed.

A True Legend

Luka Modrić will be remembered as a quiet leader, a creative genius, and a symbol of Real Madrid’s modern golden era. As he prepares to say goodbye, fans around the world will celebrate a player whose impact went far beyond goals and assists. He played with heart, elegance, and respect, and leaves as a true legend of the game.
