Global events/updates

U.S. President Donald Trump has called on the European Union to impose tariffs of up to 100% on China and India in response to their ongoing purchases of Russian oil, aiming to increase pressure on Moscow to end the Ukraine conflict. Washington signaled its readiness to “mirror” any such EU tariffs, reflecting its growing frustration over stalled peace efforts with Russia.

The proposal represents a sharp escalation in trade tensions, as India and China remain two of Russia’s largest oil buyers, and comes amid heightened diplomatic efforts following recent meetings between Russian, Indian, and Chinese leaders.

A federal judge has temporarily blocked President Trump from firing Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook as her lawsuit over the termination  proceeds, ruling that the alleged mortgage fraud predates her time at the Fed and does not qualify as legal grounds for removal under federal law. The decision upholds the Fed’s independence and means Cook remains in her role for now while the case continues.
