About the Tata Semiconductor Plant

The Tata Electronics semiconductor plant at Jagiroad, Morigaon district, Assam is being built as an OSAT (Semiconductor Assembly and Test). The greenfield campus is spread over an area of 171 acres close to Guwahati, and is one of the largest private investments ever in the Northeast region, with ₹27,000 crore investments.

The plant will be able to manufacture up to 48 million chips a day to cater to applications like automotive, electric vehicles, consumer electronics, telecommunications, artificial intelligence (AI), data centres, and power electronics. The facility will also incorporate renewable energy integration and advanced manufacturing technologies to enable mass production of chips. The project will also support the development of a semiconductor supplier ecosystem in the Northeast.

Why Assam Was Chosen

  • Strong Government support: Assam Government had provided ₹3,789 crore as incentive, land and expedient approvals for the project.
  • Proximity: Jagiroad is approximately 55 km from Guwahati, and is well connected by various forms of transportation such as highways, railways, and the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport.
  • Act east policy: Assam’s geographical position with the markets of the Southeast Asian countries will help in the development of trade and manufacturing with the neighbouring countries.
  • Industrial development: The project will bring about high-tech manufacturing in the Northeast, draw ancillary industries and semiconductors suppliers.
  • Employment: approximately 27,000 employment opportunities.
  • Balanced regional growth: Establishing the first significant semiconductor manufacturing unit in the Northeast region of India which helps to spread the high value manufacturing beyond the traditional industrial states.

Economics impact on Assam

The project cost would have been estimated to be around ₹27,000 crore, which is one of the largest private investments in Assam’s history. The facility will require about 27,000 jobs of which 15,000 will be direct and 12,000 indirect. Local businesses in packaging, logistics, engineering services, maintenance and industrial supplies are likely to see a boost in demand. Improvements in the roads, power supply, water facility and industrial utilities will be faster around Jagiroad and nearby areas. The establishment of semiconductor plant is anticipated to bring electronics manufacturers, component suppliers and technology giants from around the world to Assam. Better fiscal outcomes with exports and business expansion increasing, Assam’s economy is expected to get boosted and generate better revenue in the long term.

Conclusion

The incentive package of ₹14,044 crore will create a powerful semiconductor ecosystem. The project will help to enhance the chip manufacturing capabilities of the Indian market, create jobs and strengthen Assam’s position as an important chip manufacturing hub in India by supporting Tata Electronics’ plant in Assam.
