Synopsis: The people of Bengaluru have been waiting for a long time for the Ejipura flyover to be finished, the good news is the new deadline for its completion by the end of this year. The authorities are also thinking about making a service road that will run parallel to the Ejipura flyover to ease congestion due to traffic.
Only few infrastructure projects in Bengaluru have drawn as much attention as the 2.4 km Ejipura-Kendriya Sadan flyover. The project, spanning the Koramangala and Ejipura corridors, aims to bypass 7 major junctions and shave roughly 30 minutes off peak-hour commutes. The project has been delayed because of land acquisition issues, disputes with the contractor and multiple deadline changes, this has made it a symbol of Bengaluru’s infrastructure problems.
The Greater Bengaluru Authority has set a new deadline to complete the Ejipura flyover, officials say that the main issues that had stopped the construction for years have now been fixed which will allow the work to move forward faster. The authorities are also planning a service road that will run alongside some parts of the Ejipura flyover corridor.
What Is the Service Road Plan?
To make it easier for people to get around locally and to reduce traffic jams, authorities are planning a service road next to the flyover. This road will help vehicles that do not need to use the flyover and will also make it easier for people to get to their homes, shops and other local places in the Ejipura-Koramangala area. The new road will help improve traffic movement and connectivity, for residents and commercial establishments.
Areas That Could Benefit the Most
- Koramangala – Access to Hosur Road would be improved and congestion at key junctions might also reduce.
- Ejipura – Better traffic flow through one of the city’s most congested corridors.
- Adugodi – Easier connectivity to the Intermediate Ring Road and central business districts.
- Viveknagar – Improved movement towards Hosur Road and surrounding commercial areas.
- Hosur Road Corridor – Smoother connectivity for commuters travelling towards Electronic City and other IT hubs.
- Madiwala – Potential reduction in traffic spillovers from nearby bottlenecks.
- Electronic City-bound commuters – Faster travel from central and southeast Bengaluru.
- Embassy GolfLinks and Inner Ring Road Corridor – Better access for employees travelling to major office parks.
According to officials, construction is now in its final phase, around 728 of the 762 segments required for the flyover have already been cast, with only a limited number of spans remaining for installation. Foundation works, piers, and several structural elements have been completed, while ramp construction, road widening, and finishing works continue.
The biggest hurdle was a long-pending land issue near St. John’s Hospital, where approvals were required for construction of a critical section of the flyover. The project also suffered setbacks after the original contractor’s contract was terminated, requiring authorities to appoint a new contractor and revise project timelines. These issues pushed the completion date back multiple times over the years.
