Synopsis: In the midst of a global crisis with the ongoing conflict in the west and its impact on the global economic landscape, Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed to citizens and institutions to consider work-from-home practices and conserve fuel. Several Indian states have converted this appeal into concrete administrative action.
The start of May was marked with an appeal which demanded economic patriotism from the citizens and the institutions. PM Modi’s appeal created ripples across the states, parallely launching a new campaign “Mera Bharat, Mera Yogdan” on May 17, 2026. A few states welcomed this by implementing administrative measures aligning with this initiative.
States that have implemented WFH after PM Modi’s Appeal
1. Delhi

Delhi government introduced measures under the ‘Mera Bharat, Mera Yogdaan’ Campaign. The measures included,
- Two-days Work from Home every week, monitored by the Labour Department
- All the ministers and officials are advised to use metro under Metro Monday
- A No-vehicle day in which people will only use public transports
- The Delhi government will not host any big events or conferences for the next three months.
2. Maharashtra

Maharashtra government also took steps for mitigating fuel consumption. The IT employees of Pune also urged the government to implement mandatory Work from Home due to worsening traffic in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad. The measures include,
- Reduction of ministerial convoys by 50%
- Officials were requested to prioritise electric vehicles, public transportation or car-pooling, to reduce fuel consumption
- Banned bike rallies and vehicle processions
- Moving towards virtual meetings in many departments
3. Uttar Pradesh

In UP, the government has admitted to the issues raised from the ongoing west conflict, and has taken initiatives which align with the appeal of PM Modi. The measures include,
- A No-vehicle day weekly is suggested by the government
- A suggestion of smaller convoys of officials and ministers
- Adoption of public transports is advised to the ministers, MPs, and MLAs at least weekly once.
- 50% of the department meetings in virtual mode is advised to be practised
4. Rajasthan

Rajasthan government aligned itself with the appeal and the nation-wide campaign ‘Mera Bharat, Mera Yogdan’ by,
- Reducing the convoy-size of the ministers, officials, and public representatives
- Advising the offices to implement work-from home
- Remote working up to 2 days a week for non-emergency state employees
- CM Bhajan Lal Sharma reduced his convoy and started using EV for official travels
5. Madhya Pradesh

Madhya Pradesh welcomed this appeal by,
- CM Mohan Yadav reducing his convoy from 13 vehicles to 8 vehicles
- Vehicle rallies banned
- The CM announced strict actions will be taken for officials who violate the save-energy rules
- No-vehicles day and work-from-home is advised to the departments

6. Gujarat

Gujarat government initiatives aligned with this campaign are,
- The Governor avoided air travels within the state
- Some officials gave up on the escort vehicles completely
- Companies and firms advised to consider work-from home options for employees
- A Chemical-engine free day, encouraging students and faculty members to use public transport, bicycles and electric vehicles
- A set target of 35% reduction in fuel consumption by the state government
7. Bihar

The Bihar government participated in this by
- Reduction of convoy-size for ministers and officials
- Work-from-home advised to the companies
- Undertaking only-necessary travels advised and using public transportation is continuously promoted.
8. Tripura

One of the first states to welcome this appeal. The measures taken by the government are,
- Rotational work-from home for 50% of Group C and Group D employees
- Staff may attend office on alternate weeks under this arrangement
- Encouragement on using public transportation
- Small-size convoy adopted by the CM and other officials

9. Sikkim

The Sikkim government has taken similar measures as Tripura government by,
- Following the 50% rotational work-from-home of Group C and Group D employees.
- A fuel allotment cut of 30% on official vehicles
- Promoting use of public transportation
- 1-year ban on purchase of new government vehicles
10. Uttarakhand

The government of Uttarakhand has reacted positively and promptly to this appeal and the measures include,
- Introduction of EV policy, under this all new government vehicle purchases of 50% must be electric.
- No-vehicle day to be followed weekly by the people and the officials
- AC usage to be limited
- Work-from-home and virtual meetings whenever possible should be prioritised

PM Modi’s appeal and the campaign ‘Mera Bharat, Mera Yogdan’ has set off a wave of administrative and policy responses across states, with governments implementing work-from-home, reducing convoy-size, banning vehicle rallies, promoting public transportations, and shifting to virtual meeting setups.
