Synopsis: Bengaluru Metro commuters may soon get relief from overcrowded trains as BMRCL plans to induct three new six-coach trainsets on the Green Line by August 2026. The move is expected to improve passenger capacity, reduce peak-hour congestion, and mark the beginning of a larger fleet expansion that will also strengthen services on the Purple Line.
Bengaluru Metro passengers might soon get relief from crowded coaches with BMRCL’s plans of introducing three new train sets consisting of six coaches on the Green Line by August 2026. This step is likely to increase passenger carrying capacity, decrease congestion during peak hours, and become the start of the process of adding more trains to the Purple Line.
However, the deployment has been delayed from the planned time. Due to various technical and regulatory issues, the induction was postponed by over one year and included the following reasons:
- Damage to the prototype train while being transported.
- Signalling integration and system testing delays.
- Statutory safety testing and approvals.
- Subject to approval from Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS)
These approvals are in the process of completion and BMRCL has expected the first three to come into service for passenger service in August.
The induction of the first three trainsets marks the beginning of BMRCL’s larger fleet expansion plan. Currently, the Purple and Green Lines together operate 57 trainsets across a 77-km network, while the ideal requirement is around one train per kilometre to maintain train frequencies of three to four minutes. As more trainsets are inducted, commuters can expect improved service frequency, shorter waiting times and less crowded trains.

How Commuters will Benefit
The additional trains are expected to offer a quick solution to congestion and boost passenger numbers and efficiency for commuters.
- Reduced overcrowding during peak travel hours.
- Higher passenger carrying capacity, easing pressure on the existing fleet.
- Improved service reliability with additional trains in operation.
- Scope for more frequent services as the remaining 21 trainsets are inducted during 2026–27.
- Modern DTG (Distance-To-Go) signalling technology, allowing the trains to operate at speeds of up to 80 km/h, similar to those on the Yellow Line (RV Road–Electronic City).
Green Line connectivity
Green Line is about 33 km and runs from Madavara in north-west Bengaluru to Silk Institute in the south, with major stops at residential, commercial, and industrial areas such as Peenya, Yeshwanthpur, Rajajinagar, Malleshwaram, Majestic, Jayanagar, Banashankari, and Yelachenahalli. Moreover, Green Line serves the metro system of Bengaluru through smooth connections with other lines:
- Majestic connects the Green Line to the Purple Line for travelling from east to west.
- RV Road connects Green Line to Yellow Line and thus provides easy access to Electronic City and Bommasandra.
BMRCL’s Expansion Strategy
The introduction of the new trains is also likely to help commuters outside the Green Line. With the 21 new trains running on the Green Line, BMRCL aims to gradually move 17 existing BEML trainsets from Green Line to the Purple Line, which is the busiest line in the Namma Metro network. The re-distribution is expected to make the trains available on the Purple Line without having to purchase a new fleet.
