Synopsis: The five major expressways that are nearing completion in Uttar Pradesh, comprises more than 1,149 km will reduce intra-state travel by up to 70% by 2026. These projects are meant to boost the state’s rail network and improve connectivity.
The most populous state in India is Uttar Pradesh where the road congestion causes a strain on economic growth and day to day activities. The major players in these greenfield projects include UPEIDA and PWD, which connect the regions to national highways such as Purvanchal and Yamuna Expressways. They have been accelerated recently, minimizing journeys like Meerut-Prayagraj that used to take 12 hours and have been investing more than 70,000 crore to make UP one of the infrastructure leaders.
Ganga Expressway
The six-lane (which can eventually be expanded to eight) Ganga Expressway traversing Meerut to Prayagraj at a cost of 36,200 crore is currently at 90 percent completion to be launched by mid 2026. It reduces 10-12 hour trips to four hours at 120 km/h with interchanges with spurs to airports, interchange and freight lanes. This is the longest UP expressway which relieves the congestion of NH-27, improves the industry of Hapur and Unnao and promotes the real estate business.
Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway
This 63 km corridor between Azad Chauraha Lucknow to Kanpur Bridge with a cost amounting to Rs 4,700 crore is able to reduce 1.5-hour drives to 45 minutes. The opening of March 2026 is in the pipeline and there are 50,000-tree green belts, raised flood zones, and smart tolls. It develops IT-manufacturing synergy between the twin cities, improving e-commerce and tourism.
Gorakhpur Link Expressway
The 91km four-six lane roadway connects Jaitpur, Gorakhpur to Salarpur, Purvanchal Expressway at Azamgarh, at Rs 7,283 crore and 99 percent completion. It reduces the 60 minutes Gorakhpur-Uruwa journeys to 20 minutes in four districts, flyovers and rail bridges. This gateway enhances agricultural, industrial and religious tourism in Purvanchal.

Aligarh-Sambhal Expressway
The proposed 81 km state highway will travel through Hathras, Aligarh and Sambhal and connect NH-509 and NH-32 via the proposed 81 km highway. The approved plan by PWD facilitates the movement of western UP traffic to the Delhi-NCR and reduces logistics expenses to the brassware and farms. It works on improvements of 2026 extensions of superior commerce and services.
Vindhya Expressway
This six-lane 320 km route connecting Prayagraj to Sonbhadra through Varanasi and Mirzapur costs 22,400 crores and it links to Ganga Expressway and NH-39. It has the focus of growing mineral zones, which are already under the cabinet approval, decongestion of routes leading to Bihar and Madhya Pradesh and also encourages tourism.
Future Outlook
These expressways will be part of a 2,000+ km system at Uttar Pradesh, which will lead to 10-15% of GDP growth, generate work in logistics, and improve tourism through environment-friendly measures such as solar tolls. They are in line with Viksit Bharat which establishes mobility standards across the country.
