In the past few days, rumours have been spreading that Shreyas Iyer could become India’s next ODI captain. The talk grew louder after Iyer was left out of the Asia Cup 2025 squad, despite being in excellent form. Many wondered if this was part of a bigger plan by the selectors and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
BCCI’s Official Statement
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, speaking to Hindustan Times, made it clear that there is no discussion about making Shreyas Iyer India’s ODI captain. “That’s news to me. There have been no such discussions,” . This confirms that the board has not held any talks about leadership changes in the ODI setup.
Why Was Iyer Left Out of the Asia Cup?
When India’s Asia Cup squad was announced, many were surprised to see Iyer missing. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar explained the decision, saying it was only because of limited squad spots and not a reflection on Iyer’s form.
“It’s just that you can pick 15, and at the moment you’ll have to wait for his chance,” – Agarkar said. This shows that Iyer is very much in the selectors’ plans but simply could not be fitted into the current squad.

The Bigger Picture
For now, Rohit Sharma continues to lead India in ODIs, and the BCCI has no immediate plans for a change. While Iyer’s name was linked with captaincy because of his form and leadership experience in the IPL, the board has confirmed that no such decision has been taken.
Conclusion
The rumours of Shreyas Iyer taking over India’s ODI captaincy are not true. According to the BCCI, there have been no talks on this matter. His absence from the Asia Cup squad is only due to team balance, not because of any leadership plans. With his strong performances in recent tournaments, Iyer remains an important player for India and will surely get his chance again soon.
