In Formula 1, the Constructors’ Championship is awarded to the team that scores the most points in a season. It reflects the combined efforts of drivers, engineers, and designers.

Over the decades, a few teams have dominated the sport, building legacies that still define F1 today. Here’s a look at the top five teams with the most Constructors’ Championships as of the 2024 season.

5. Lotus – 7 Titles

  • Years won: 1963, 1965, 1968, 1970, 1972-1973, 1978

Lotus was one of the most creative and forward-thinking teams in Formula 1 during the 1960s and 1970s. Founded by Colin Chapman, Lotus introduced designs that changed racing forever, including the ground-effect car. With drivers like Jim Clark, Graham Hill, and Mario Andretti, the team collected seven Constructors’ Championships before fading from the grid.

4. Mercedes – 8 Titles

  • Years won: 2014-2021

Mercedes rewrote the record books in the turbo-hybrid era. Between 2014 and 2021, the Silver Arrows won eight championships in a row, the longest streak by any team in Formula 1 history. With Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg (later Valtteri Bottas) driving, Mercedes set new standards for dominance.

3. McLaren – 9 Titles

  • Years won: 1974, 1984-1985, 1988-1991, 1998, 2024

McLaren shares second place with Williams, also on nine titles. The team’s best period was the late 1980s and early 1990s, when Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost dominated. After years without a Constructors’ crown, McLaren made a remarkable comeback by winning the 2024 championship. Their mix of history and recent success keeps them at the top of modern F1.

2. Williams – 9 Titles

  • Years won: 1980, 1981, 1986-1987, 1992-1994, 1996-1997

Williams dominated the 1980s and 1990s with strong engineering and partnerships with top engine suppliers like Honda and Renault. Drivers such as Nigel Mansell, Alain Prost, Damon Hill, and Jacques Villeneuve helped the team to glory. Though Williams has struggled in recent years, its nine Constructors’ Championships keep it among the sport’s all-time greats.

1. Ferrari – 16 Titles

  • Years won: 1961, 1964, 1975-1977, 1979, 1982-1983, 1999-2004, 2007-2008

Ferrari is the most successful team in Formula 1 history. Based in Italy, the Scuderia has won 16 Constructors’ Championships, more than any other team. Their golden period came in the early 2000s, when Michael Schumacher and Ferrari won six titles in a row (1999-2004). Even though their last title came in 2008, Ferrari remains the most iconic name in the sport.

Honourable Mention: Red Bull Racing – 6 Titles

  • Years won: 2010-2013, 2022-2023

Red Bull is just outside the top five with six titles. They won four in a row from 2010 to 2013 with Sebastian Vettel, and then added back-to-back wins in 2022 and 2023 with Max Verstappen. Their streak ended in 2024 when McLaren claimed the championship.

Conclusion

The Constructors’ Championship highlights not just driver talent but also teamwork, technology, and strategy. From Ferrari’s unmatched 16 titles to Lotus’ innovations and Mercedes’ hybrid-era dominance, each of these teams has left a lasting mark on Formula 1. As the sport moves forward, new rivalries will emerge, but these five teams remain the benchmarks of success.
