Industry Overview

The Indian telecom sector has witnessed remarkable growth in recent years, with a subscriber base exceeding 120 crore and a teledensity of 85.85%. The industry has been driven by affordable tariffs, expanding 3G/4G coverage, evolving consumption patterns, and government initiatives.

Key players like Reliance Jio, Vodafone Idea, Bharti Airtel, and BSNL have played a significant role in shaping the industry. Reliance Jio, the newest entrant, has disrupted the market with its low-cost data plans, while Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea have maintained their positions as major players. BSNL, the state-owned telecom company, serves rural areas and has a significant market share.

As per the latest TRAI (Telecom Regulation Authority of India), the market is predominantly dominated by wireless subscribers who accounted for 116.55 crore in April 2024. The industry is expected to witness a 9.4% CAGR between 2024 and 2029 going from $48.61 billion to $76.61 billion.

Despite challenges like intense competition and high costs, the Indian telecom sector remains vital for the country’s digital transformation, with the government’s focus on 5G deployment and infrastructure development.

Market Share

In 2024, the telecom market in India is dominated by four major players. Jio leads the pack with a substantial 40.3% market share of wireless subscribers. This is followed by Bharti, which holds a significant 33.1% of the market. Together, these two companies control nearly three-quarters of the wireless subscriber base in India.

The remaining market share is divided between Vodafone Idea and BSNL. Vodafone Idea maintains a considerable presence with 19.86% of the market. Meanwhile, BSNL, the state-owned telecom operator, holds a smaller but still noteworthy 7.57% share. Despite its lower percentage, BSNL continues to play a role in the Indian telecom landscape, particularly in rural and underserved areas.

Performance Highlights of Telecom Companies

Reliance Jio

Established in 2016 and headquartered in Navi Mumbai, has rapidly become India’s largest telecom operator. With over 90,000 employees, it revolutionized the market with affordable data plans and extensive 4G coverage. Reliance Jio has established itself as a dominant player in the Indian telecommunications market.

The company operates in all 22 telecom circles of the country. Jio boasts over 500,000 towers, facilitating extensive coverage. With an average revenue per user (ARPU) of approximately ₹181.7, it serves around 48.18 crore customers.

Jio has a vast network of service centers and kiosks across the country. The company offers various services, including 4G LTE, 5G, broadband, and digital services. Recently, Jio lost about 750,000 subscribers due to a price hike implemented in July 2024. However, it continues to lead in fixed-line connections, adding over 480,000 new subscribers in July alone. In the broadband segment, Jio remains the leader with approximately 48.86 crore users.

Vodafone Idea

Vodafone Idea was formed in 2018 from a merger of Vodafone India and Idea Cellular, is based in Mumbai. It employs around 16,000 people and serves crores across India, facing challenges from intense competition. Vodafone Idea (Vi) operates in all 22 telecom circles and has an estimated tower count of around 170,000. Its ARPU is approximately ₹146, with a customer base of about 21.56 crore users.

Vi has numerous service centers across India and offers services such as 3G, 4G LTE, and broadband. Like its competitors, Vi experienced a decline in subscribers, losing approximately 14.1 lakh users after the July price hike. Despite these challenges, Vi continues to innovate and expand its service offerings to retain its customer base. Although they continue to struggle with AGR dues.

Bharti Airtel

Bharti Airtel was founded in 1995 and headquartered in New Delhi, is a leading telecom provider with approximately 23,500 employees. It offers diverse services and has a strong presence in both urban and rural markets. Additionally, the company is the second-largest mobile operator in Africa.

Bharti Airtel is also the largest integrated communications solution provider in the Indian telecom landscape. It operates across all 22 circles in India and also has operations spread across 17 countries. Airtel’s ARPU stands at about ₹211 as of June 2025. Serving approximately 55 crore customers.

The company maintains a significant number of service centers nationwide. Airtel provides a range of services, including 5G/4G LTE and broadband. Recently, Airtel faced a loss of about 16.9 lakh subscribers following the tariff hike in July 2024. Despite this setback, it continues to perform well in the fixed-line segment with over 1.36 lakh new additions during the same period. Airtel also leads the machine-to-machine cellular connections market with a substantial share.

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL)

Established in 2000 and headquartered in New Delhi, is a state-owned enterprise. It employs close to 57000 people and focuses on providing services in rural areas, maintaining a significant market share. Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), the state-owned operator, operates in all the 22 telecom circles in India.

Its ARPU is lower than its private counterparts at around and it keeps sliding downwards (BSNL prepaid ARPU was ₹60.61 and post-paid ARPU was ₹111.92 in June 2023. BSNL serves approximately 8.85 crore customers and has a network of service centers throughout India, especially in rural areas.

The company offers various services including landline, broadband, and mobile services. In a surprising turn of events, BSNL gained over 29.4 lakh subscribers in July 2024 amid the tariff hikes affecting other operators. This growth highlights BSNL’s unique position as it continues to adapt to market demands while expanding its reach. However, this gain has given a temporary respite for the failing telecom giant.

Spectrum Dues

Vodafone Idea (VIL) is facing significant challenges after the Supreme Court rejected its curative petition regarding ₹70,300 crore in Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) dues, besides ₹1.39 trillion for spectrum charges. Although The company has already cleared ₹7,900 crore, this ruling has prompted VIL to seek government assistance for relief.

The company’s chairman, Ravinder Takkar, emphasized that it is now up to the government to address these financial obligations, which stem from what they claim are calculation errors.

The implications of this situation extend to competitors like Bharti Airtel, Jio, and BSNL. If the government intervenes favorably for VIL, it could stabilize competition in the telecom sector. Conversely, if VIL fails to secure relief, it might struggle further, potentially benefiting Airtel and Jio by capturing its market share. As Airtel has cleared its spectrum dues by paying 7,904 crores.

Moreover, VIL has recently secured a contract worth ₹50,000 crore with major equipment suppliers for network expansion. This move indicates its commitment to maintaining operations despite financial hurdles. Overall, the AGR dues situation remains critical and could reshape the competitive landscape in Indian telecommunications.

Conclusion

The Indian telecom sector continues to evolve rapidly, with four major players shaping its landscape. Jio leads the market with innovative strategies and aggressive growth. Airtel maintains a strong position through consistent performance and service quality. Meanwhile, Vodafone Idea faces significant challenges but shows resilience.

BSNL, despite its smaller market share, plays a crucial role in rural connectivity. The industry’s future hinges on factors like 5G adoption, regulatory decisions, and market competition. Each company’s unique strengths and challenges will determine their success in this dynamic environment. The sector’s growth remains vital for India’s digital transformation and economic progress.
