What is the NEWS:
There have been some significant milestones in the development process of electric vehicles, one of them being Sona Comstar’s collaboration with DENSO, a global pioneer in advanced technology in the automotive industry. While Sona Comstar had gained recognition previously by providing essential components of electric vehicles, the partnership represents a milestone of entering the production and development of complete electric and hybrid powertrains.
Previously, Sona focused on developing individual parts; now it is engaged in producing components such as traction motors, inverters, generators, and e-Axles, which are essential for an electric vehicle.
The collaboration will be carried out through two dedicated joint ventures. One will cater to passenger, commercial, and other larger vehicles by developing high-voltage, liquid-cooled traction motors, inverters, and generators. The other will focus on electric and hybrid two- and three-wheelers, manufacturing air-cooled traction motors, inverters, generators, and e-Axles.
Sona Comstar and DENSO have announced two joint ventures to strengthen their presence across the EV and hybrid powertrain market. For four-wheelers and larger vehicle applications, the companies signed a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) to develop high-efficiency liquid-cooled traction inverters, traction motors, and generators. A new manufacturing JV will be formed in India, with DENSO holding a 51% stake and management control, while Sona Comstar will own 49%.
For the two-wheeler and three-wheeler segment, Sona Comstar will transfer its existing traction motor and controller business into a subsidiary, after which DENSO will acquire a 49% stake at an enterprise value of ₹1750 Crore, while Sona Comstar will retain 51% ownership and management control.
