Blockchain technology has turned pixelated images on a computer screen and algorithmic designs into highly valuable digital assets known as non-fungible tokens (NFTs) traded daily on exchanges.

Most NFTs are created and marketed as collections, basically groups or series of art pieces by the same artist or studio.

While the NFT marketplace is generally crowded with numerous collections to choose from, a few stand out not only because of their unique designs but also their jaw-dropping price tags.

In this article, we take a look at the five most expensive NFT collections, their background information, and their key numbers.

CryptoPunks

CryptoPunks is among the first NFT collections to go viral and catch the attention of many, including those in the mainstream. Launched in 2017 by Larva Labs on Ethereum, it is a collection of 10,000 pixelated characters, each with a unique combination of traits. The rarest characters are aliens, apes, and zombies.

The biggest sale for this collection was CryptoPunk #5822, an ultra-rare alien Punk with a blue bandana. This was sold for $23.7 million (8,000 ETH) in 2022.

Many view CryptoPunks as historical artifacts in the NFT space, making them a top choice for collectors who value legacy and rarity.

Bored Ape Yacht Club

Bored Ape Yacht Club launched in April 2021 and quickly became the face of NFT culture. The collection features 10,000 cartoon apes with different fur colors, outfits, and accessories.

Built on Ethereum, BAYC isn’t just about art—it grants holders exclusive membership perks, live events, and intellectual property rights.

The biggest sale of the BAYC was the #8817 NFT, a gold-furred ape with a spinner hat and party horn that sold for $3.4 million (852 ETH) at Sotheby’s. The second most expensive sale was BAYC #3749, which was nicknamed “The Captain,” and it was sold for $2.91 million.

BAYC remains one of the most recognized NFT collections, with endorsements from celebrities and major brands. You can buy Bored Apes on the Magic Eden marketplace and a handful of other NFT platforms.

Art Blocks Curated

Art Blocks took NFTs in a different direction and focused more on generative art. These NFTs are created through algorithms that make each one a unique digital masterpiece. The ‘Curated’ section represents the highest-quality works from handpicked artists.

Ringers #109 by Dmitri Cherniak, which was sold for $6.93 million, has been recorded as the most expensive

Unlike profile picture (PFP) projects like BAYC or CryptoPunks, Art Blocks represents a blend of technology and fine art, attracting collectors who appreciate algorithmic creativity.

Mutant Ape Yacht Club

Mutant Apes was introduced to improve and add value to the BAYC community while also giving rewards to the existing BAYC holders.

Owners of Bored Apes were able to use a ‘Mutant Serum’ to create twisted, zombie-like versions of their NFTs. Half of the collection’s 20,000 Mutant Apes were airdropped to BAYC owners, while the rest were sold in a Dutch auction.

The most expensive MAYC was the MAYC #4849, it went for 350 ETH (~$1.13 million). Mutant Apes increased the overall number of people interacting with the BAYC ecosystem at a much lower cost while maintaining a high demand for rare traits.

Azuki

Azuki brought anime-inspired avatars to the NFT world by creating a 10,000-piece collection on Ethereum. More than just what you call digital art, Azuki grants holders access to “The Garden,” a community with exclusive drops and real-world events.

The most expensive NFT sold in that collection was Azuki #9605, which was sold for 420.7 ETH (~$1.4 million).

Azuki’s high-quality artwork and strong community engagement have made it one of the most successful NFT projects outside the BAYC ecosystem.

Final Take

These five NFT collections have set records in the digital art market, with sales reaching tens of millions.

CryptoPunks and BAYC dominate as status symbols, while Art Blocks appeals to those interested in algorithmic art. MAYC and Azuki provide alternative options for collectors looking for strong communities and unique aesthetics.

The NFT market remains unpredictable, but one thing is clear: These collections have cemented their place in the evolution of blockchain history.
