Synopsis: PM Gati Shakti Mega projects refer to high impact projects being developed under the Government of India’s ₹100+ lakh crore Gati Shakti Master Plan. These projects aim at strengthening the economic growth of the country.

India is investing in 15 mega projects estimated to be around $240 billion dollars and are expected to be completed in next 3 years. By 2028, these efforts target halving logistics costs to 10% of GDP, tripling rail freight capacity and increasing power generation from renewable sources by 40%, reshaping the nation into a top global manufacturing hub. 

Urban Mobility 

  • The PM Gati Shakti blueprint a Rs. 100 lakh crore digital platform uniting 16 ministries across 1200 + data layers roads, rails, airports and more. By 2028 Gati Shakti will deliver logistics cost to 14%, 10% of GDP and 2 lakh crores of annual savings. 
  • Mumbai’s Prabadevi double-decker flyover that handles 50,000 vehicles daily slashing peak hours delays by 35%, it is an eastern corridor connecting Shil Phata to Ranjnoli via Kalyan with a 21km stretch lower deck for vehicles, upper deck for metro rail. It is a 6 line flyover with investment of Rs. 600 crore. 
  • Metro in the Mountains – Jammu’s 23 km stretch connecting 22 stations of Jammu & Kashmir. It is the northernmost metro with investment of Rs. 8500 crore for this project. Phase 1 is 50 % complete in the month of May 2025. By 2028 phase 1 will be operating with commuting 1.5 lakh passengers daily connecting Jammu economic zones to residential hubs.  
  • Surat, a Diamond and textile capital of India is upcoming with a mega project of 40 km driverless Metro Network covering 2 corridors with 37 stations one corridor is of 21.6 km north to south and another of 18.7 km east to west. The project cost Rs. 12,020 crore, this project is 70% complete. The driverless metro will be linking to the Ahmedabad metro.

International Airports

  • Bhogapuram International Airport: This International airport is in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh which is a greenfield  international airport that is built on 2500 acres of land. It has Phase 1 which handles 6 million passengers and can be expandable to 30 million. It includes a 3500 meter runway, the project cost Rs.4500 crore. This airport is 86% complete as of September 2025. 
  • Navi Mumbai International Airport: India’s largest airport built on 1,160 hectares of reclaimed land in Ulwe India’s first green field airport featuring 2 full length parallel runways one of 3700 meters, the other 4000 meters capable of handling the world’s largest aircraft including airbus A380 simultaneously ultimate capacity when complete 90 million passengers per year with phase 1 cost of Rs.16,700 crore. The airport is already 95% complete with 4.4 lakh sq. mt. terminal. It is India’s 1st multimodal cargo hub with direct connectivity to the trans harbour link Mumbai metro line 12. It will generate approx. Rs. 25000 crore in economic activity.

Highways and Freight 

  • Varanasi Kolkata expressway is a  710 km connecting 2 states which links Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal. This expressway drops the travel time from 15 hours to 11 hours. The project investment is of Rs.30,000 cr, the project is  60% complete and the 6 line corridor will be expanded to 8 lines by late 2026 or early 2027. It includes 26 major bridges, and bypasses 40+ towns. 
  • Bharatmala Pariyojana Phase 1 is a 34,800 km highway mega program launched in 2017 with investment of Rs. 5.35 lakh crore. It includes economic corridors, border roads like Bangladesh, Myanmar, Bhutan and Nepal, coastal routes and port connectivity as of late 2024 54% work is completed fully operational by 2027 to 2028. By 2028 over 25000 kms will be operational cutting the freight time by 20%. This project will enable Rs.50,000 crore in new export corridors. 
  • Delhi-Mumbai Expressway: India’s longest 1350 km greenfield expressway with 8 lanes wide expandable to 12 connecting to Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra this will bring down the travel time from 24 hours to 12 hours the project cost is Rs. 1 lakh crore. 98% of project is completed will be operational in December 2025. There are EV charging stations along the corridors. This expressway will cut logistics costs by Rs.18,000 crore annually. 
  • Dedicated Freight Corridors: DFC eastern and western India is rewriting rail with 2 freight only super highways. The Eastern DFC is 1,504 km Ludhiana Dankuni and will be operational from June 2026 , Western DFC is 1504 km Dadri Mumbai will be ready by December 2026. The rail can have 25 ton axle loads the investment is of Rs. 81,459 crore. This will cut freight cost by 20%.

High Speed Rail

  • Bengaluru – Hyderabad high speed rail which had a travel time of 19 hrs, is cut down to 2 hours to cover a distance of 626 km. The project investment is Rs. 60,000 cr. They are using Japanese or Chinese HSR tech. This rail has only 10 – 12  stops, passing from Kempegowda airport, Tumkur, Anantapur and Kurnool. Which will be ready in 2030.
  • Mumbai Ahmedabad bullet train: India’s first bullet train 508 kms in 2 hrs 7 min down from 9 hours, they are using Japan’s Shinkansen E5 technology running 320 km per hour. The project investment is Rs. 1.08 lakh crore. L & T handles Rs. 24985 crore contract by 2029 the bullet train will be operational. 

 Energy Logistics and Smart Cities

  • Renewable Energy:  500 GW mission spotlights Gujrat’s Khavda mega park which will be world’s largest at 30 GW and offshore wind targeting 400GW by 2028 for energy independence.
  • Logistics revolutionization through the National Logistics Policy ULIP platform, tracking cargo nationwide via 35 multi-model parks to rival China. 
  • The Smart Cities mission nears completion in 100 urban centers, deploying AI traffic, IoT waste systems, and command centers for 15 crore residential with 25% better efficiency.
