Synopsis: Bengaluru is facing a parking shortage. To solve this issue the Bengaluru municipality has come up with a plan. They want to give a tax break to people who own plots of land if they let the city use these plots as parking spaces, for everyone.

Bengaluru is planning a new parking policy that may offer substantial property tax exemptions to owners of vacant land who open their plots for public parking. The proposal, being jointly developed by the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) and the city traffic police, aims to expand off-street parking facilities while reducing roadside parking through stricter rules and higher parking charges. Under the draft plan, eligible landowners could receive property tax waivers for extended periods, encouraging the conversion of unused plots into parking hubs and easing traffic congestion across the city.

BBMP’s New Proposal

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike has come up with a new parking policy, this policy will give property tax exemptions to people who own plots of land and turn them into parking spaces for everyone to use. Under the parking policy they will decide how long the tax exemption will last, it depends on what kind of parking facilities are built and how many cars it can hold.

After the exemption period ends, owners will only be required to pay service charges instead of regular property tax.

Conditions to Qualify

To get tax benefits the parking facility must:

  • Operate for at least 250 days in a year.
  • Be open for a minimum of 12 hours
  • Have the required parking space.
  • Share parking availability information with the Greater Bengaluru Authority.
  • Be used for public parking.

The policy also says that if a place is used for both parking and other things like shops or homes it won’t get tax exemption. The new parking policy also suggests some changes, these include:

  • No free public parking, except for bicycles and auto-rickshaw stands.
  • Minimum parking fees based on the type of road.
  • Paid parking permits for homes.
  • Stricter parking rules, near metro and suburban railway stations.

The proposed policy can help people in Bengaluru, owners of plots can pay less property tax if they turn their unused land into public parking lots, this change can make life easier for people who live and work here and for those who commute daily because there will be parking spaces available and less traffic, on the roads.Local shops and businesses might get customers because it will be easier for people to park and visit them. The proposal is still being discussed and needs approval before it can be implemented.
